The Girl in Grey

The girl in grey was searching for the color of her soul.
The brilliant color that she thought would make her spirit whole.
So she set out to find it on a journey long and hard.
And soon she hoped her pale colored grey she could discard.

The full, orange sun first caught her eye, like burning, blazing coal.
And so she thought that orange might be the color of her soul.
But every time she sought it in its bed up in the sky
The flames would block her path and make it far too hot to try.

And so she moved to green, the shade atop of every tree.
She hoped her search had ended, and she prayed that very plea.
But though she tried her hardest to ascend and reach the green,
She found she could not climb enough,
And gave up with a scream.

Frustration scratched for entrance, but she choked the feeling down.
She moved to underneath the earth; a soothing, musty brown.
But alas her soul said no, that brown was not her color.
And so she shrugged, as anger swelled,
And moved on to another.

The white of clouds was clear and pure.
She prayed that was the one.
She prayed her journey could now end, and that her quest was done.
But every time that she approached
The clouds of gentle white,
They disappeared or blew away
And soon were out of sight.

Not moments later while she searched
A robin darted past.
Its crimson red stood out to her,
And wanting entered fast.
But I'm afraid that bird of red
Did not want to be caught.
It flew away with peppy chirps,
And left the girl distraught.

Next on her list was yellow, like the pollen in the wind.
She chased it night and day, and cried to God it would give in.
But it did not, and she gave up,
Defeated and alone.
She hung her head and called it quits
And headed back to home.

But on her way she noticed something calm, yet wild too.
It was the ocean raging forth, an endless sea of blue.
With one last shred of hope and want, she plunged into the spray.
And that, my friend, was her mistake,
For now she's there to stay.

Her poor, lost spirit's out there somewhere, searching for her color.
But what she didn't realize is that there was no other.
Her soul was grey and beautiful,
But to it she was blind.
Her color she already had,
But that she'll never find.
